Transphobia

Prejudice, discrimination, or hostility directed at transgender people. Transphobia can range from casual microaggressions (misgendering, intrusive questions) to systemic discrimination (barriers to healthcare, housing, employment) to violence.

Transphobia is rooted in the false assumption that cisgender identity is the only "normal" or valid one. It manifests in policies like bathroom bills, restrictions on gender-affirming care, and sports bans, as well as in everyday hostility toward visibly trans people.

Transphobia kills. Trans people — particularly Black trans women — face disproportionately high rates of violence and suicide attempts, driven largely by societal rejection. Combating transphobia means supporting trans people in policy, in communities, and in daily life.
