LGBTQ
An acronym standing for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning. Often written as LGBTQ+ or LGBTQIA+ to include intersex, asexual, and other identities. The term is used as an umbrella label for the community of people who are not heterosexual and/or not cisgender.
The acronym has evolved over time. Earlier forms included GLBT and LGBT. The "Q" was added to include queer (reclaimed as a positive, inclusive term) and questioning (people still exploring their identity). The "+" acknowledges that the acronym cannot list every identity.
While widely used, some people critique the acronym for grouping very different experiences under one label, or for prioritizing certain letters over others.
