PEP

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis — a short course of HIV medication taken after a potential exposure to prevent infection. PEP is the emergency version of PrEP: a 28-day course that must be started within 72 hours of exposure, and ideally within 24 hours.

PEP is for emergencies only — it is not a replacement for PrEP or condoms. It works best when started as soon as possible after a possible HIV exposure, whether through sex, a broken condom, needle sharing, or assault.

Where to get PEP: emergency rooms, sexual health clinics, and some LGBTQ+ health centers. If you think you've been exposed to HIV, don't wait — go to an ER or clinic within 72 hours and say you need PEP. Many jurisdictions provide PEP free of charge.
