Neopronouns

Pronoun sets created to provide gender-neutral options beyond they/them. Examples include xe/xem, ze/zir, ey/em, fae/faer, and thon/thon. Neopronouns are used by some non-binary, trans, and gender-nonconforming people who feel that existing pronoun options don't fit them.

Neopronouns are not a new phenomenon — the first recorded English neopronoun, "thon," dates to 1858. They are grammatically functional: "Xe went to the store. I saw xem there."

Learning to use someone's neopronouns takes practice. The same rules apply as with any pronouns: ask if unsure, use them consistently, correct yourself when you slip, and never mock or debate someone's pronoun choice.
