Intersex

A person born with sex characteristics (chromosomes, gonads, or genitals) that don't fit typical definitions of male or female. Being intersex is a natural biological variation, not a disorder — around 1.7% of people are born intersex, roughly the same number as redheads.

Intersex variations include conditions like Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS), Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), and Turner Syndrome. Many intersex people are subjected to medically unnecessary "normalizing" surgeries in infancy without consent — a practice intersex activists are working to end.

Being intersex is about biology, not identity, but many intersex people consider themselves part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Not all intersex people identify as LGBTQ+.
