Coming Out

The ongoing process of telling people about your LGBTQ+ identity. Coming out is not a single event — it happens repeatedly, with each new person, job, city, and community you encounter.

There is no correct way to come out, no required order, and no obligation to come out at all. Some people come out publicly; others tell only trusted people; others stay closeted for safety or personal reasons. All of these are valid.

Coming out to parents and family is often the most emotionally complex step, since it can affect housing, financial support, and family relationships. Before coming out, consider your safety, have a support plan, and remember that you control the pace.
