Closeted

The state of not being publicly out about your LGBTQ+ identity, or of keeping your identity private from specific people or contexts. People may be closeted for many reasons: safety, family rejection, employment discrimination, legal risk, or personal readiness.

Being closeted is not a failure or a moral weakness — it is a survival strategy in a world that is often hostile to queer people. In more than 60 countries, same-sex relationships are criminalized, and being out can mean imprisonment or death.

The opposite is being out. Many people exist in between — out to friends but not family, out at work but not at home. Nobody owes the world their identity, and leaving the closet is a personal decision that must never be forced.
