Ballroom Culture

A Black queer subculture that emerged in Harlem, New York, in the late 20th century. Ballroom culture centers on "balls" — competitions where participants "walk" categories like runway, vogue, and realness, judged on performance, creativity, and authenticity.

Ballroom is organized into "houses" — chosen families led by "mothers" and "fathers" who mentor and protect younger members, many of whom were rejected by their biological families. Legendary houses include the House of LaBeija, House of Xtravaganza, and House of Ninja.

Ballroom gave the world vogue dance, which Madonna popularized in her 1990 song and video — though the culture itself began decades earlier. Ballroom remains a vital, protective space for Black and Latinx queer and trans people.
